Mayank lives in a small village. There is scarcity of water in the village. The villagers decide to save each and every drop of water during this rainy season. They resolve to execute this idea as soon as it starts raining. This news gets published in the newspapers. Mayank receives a letter from his cousin Priya in this regard. He
gives a quick reply.

मयंक एक छोटे से गांव में रहता है। गांव में पानी की कमी है। गांव वाले इस बरसात के मौसम में पानी की एक-एक बूंद बचाने का फैसला करते हैं। बारिश शुरू होते ही वे इस विचार को अंजाम देने का संकल्प लेते हैं। यह खबर अखबारों में छपती है। मयंक को इस संबंध में अपनी चचेरी बहन प्रिया से एक पत्र मिलता है। वह तुरंत जवाब देता है।

I am really very happy to receive your letter. Actually I was expecting it from you. I am happy that you read the newspapers daily and you are aware of the things going around. I very much appreciate your curiosity and thirst for information. Keep it up, these qualities will definitely help you grow into an alert citizen. You have rightly guessed that I attended the inaugural function of water conservation programme in my village.

मुझे आपका पत्र पाकर बहुत खुशी हुई। दरअसल मुझे आपसे इसकी उम्मीद थी। मुझे खुशी है कि आप रोजाना अखबार पढ़ते हैं और आपको आसपास की चीजों की जानकारी है। मैं आपकी जिज्ञासा और जानकारी की प्यास की बहुत सराहना करता हूं। इसे जारी रखें, ये गुण निश्चित रूप से आपको एक जागरूक नागरिक बनने में मदद करेंगे। आपने सही अनुमान लगाया है कि मैं अपने गांव में जल संरक्षण कार्यक्रम के उद्घाटन समारोह में शामिल हुआ था।

The word conservation literally means to save something. It may be water, energy, soil or some species of animals and plants. In terms of conservation of water it means that we all should save rain water in the rivers, ponds, wells and in the fields to raise the ground water level of the earth. At the same time we should use water with economy. When the rain water percolates down into the earth, it no longer remains thirsty.

संरक्षण शब्द का शाब्दिक अर्थ है किसी चीज़ को बचाना। यह पानी, ऊर्जा, मिट्टी या जानवरों और पौधों की कुछ प्रजातियाँ हो सकती हैं। जल संरक्षण के संदर्भ में इसका मतलब है कि हम सभी को नदियों, तालाबों, कुओं और खेतों में बारिश के पानी को बचाना चाहिए ताकि धरती का भूजल स्तर ऊपर उठ सके। साथ ही हमें पानी का किफ़ायती तरीके से इस्तेमाल करना चाहिए। जब ​​बारिश का पानी धरती में नीचे चला जाता है, तो वह प्यासी नहीं रहती।

We are living in a very challenging era. Ruthless cutting of trees and destruction of forests have resulted in scanty rainfall. We see scarcity of water growing almost everywhere which is adversely affecting the cultivation of crops. How can we be happy with thirsty soil? If the fields do not have plenty of water it affects the production of food grain and the country faces shortage of food. Our brothers and sisters who live in villages start migrating to the cities and towns in search of work. The cities fail to accommodate them and there arise many social and economic problems.

हम बहुत ही चुनौतीपूर्ण दौर में जी रहे हैं। पेड़ों की बेरहमी से कटाई और जंगलों के विनाश के कारण बारिश कम हो रही है। हम देखते हैं कि हर जगह पानी की कमी हो रही है, जिसका फसलों की खेती पर प्रतिकूल प्रभाव पड़ रहा है। प्यासी धरती से हम कैसे खुश रह सकते हैं? अगर खेतों में भरपूर पानी न हो तो इसका असर खाद्यान्न उत्पादन पर पड़ता है और देश में खाद्यान्न की कमी हो जाती है। हमारे भाई-बहन जो गाँवों में रहते हैं, काम की तलाश में शहरों और कस्बों की ओर पलायन करने लगते हैं। शहर उन्हें जगह नहीं दे पाते और कई सामाजिक और आर्थिक समस्याएँ पैदा हो जाती हैं।

You can realise that ours is the new generation which has to play a very important role in the future. It is our duty to remain awake and share the responsibility to find solution to the problem of scarcity of water. The Government has motivated all the sections of the society to come forward to save each and every drop of water. We receive water through rainfall. This is very unfortunate that most of the water flows down the rivers and reaches the sea, thus it remains unused. We are a witness to the emptied and dried up rivers, ponds, wells and tubewells. We should not sit silent. Under water conservation programme we are trying to harvest rain water at different levels.

आप समझ सकते हैं कि हमारी नई पीढ़ी को भविष्य में बहुत महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभानी है। यह हमारा कर्तव्य है कि हम जागते रहें और पानी की कमी की समस्या का समाधान खोजने की जिम्मेदारी साझा करें। सरकार ने समाज के सभी वर्गों को पानी की एक-एक बूंद बचाने के लिए आगे आने के लिए प्रेरित किया है। हमें पानी वर्षा के माध्यम से प्राप्त होता है। यह बहुत दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण है कि अधिकांश पानी नदियों से बहकर समुद्र में चला जाता है, जिससे वह अनुपयोगी रह जाता है। हम नदियों, तालाबों, कुओं और ट्यूबवेलों के खाली और सूख जाने के गवाह हैं। हमें चुप नहीं बैठना चाहिए। जल संरक्षण कार्यक्रम के तहत हम विभिन्न स्तरों पर वर्षा जल को संचय करने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं।

The farmers will store water in their fields by building Medha Bandh around their fields. They will also dig small ponds in their fields to accumulate rainwater. Similarly old structures like wells and ponds will be deepened and cleaned. The stop dams on the rivulets and the rivers will be repaired and made functional to hold back sufficient water. What a wonderful scene it will be for us to have the river of the village full of water throughout the year!

किसान अपने खेतों के चारों ओर मेढ़ा बांध बनाकर पानी का भंडारण करेंगे। वे अपने खेतों में वर्षा जल संचय करने के लिए छोटे-छोटे तालाब भी खोदेंगे। इसी तरह कुओं और तालाबों जैसी पुरानी संरचनाओं को गहरा और साफ किया जाएगा। नालों और नदियों पर बने स्टॉप डैम की मरम्मत की जाएगी और उन्हें पर्याप्त पानी रोकने के लिए चालू किया जाएगा। हमारे लिए यह कितना अद्भुत दृश्य होगा कि गांव की नदी साल भर पानी से भरी रहेगी!

We will again have the enjoyable time of swimming in the rivers of our own which we had a few years ago. You can easily understand that if the rivers and the ponds of a place are full of water, the tubewells will automatically be recharged and will continue to give us water throughout the year.

हम फिर से अपनी नदियों में तैरने का वही आनंद लेंगे जो कुछ साल पहले लेते थे। आप आसानी से समझ सकते हैं कि अगर किसी जगह की नदियाँ और तालाब पानी से भरे हुए हैं, तो ट्यूबवेल अपने आप रिचार्ज हो जाएँगे और हमें साल भर पानी देते रहेंगे।

I would like to mention that the Government alone cannot do everything. Similarly only shouting slogans will not be of any help. Water is everybody’s essential need so everybody including we children should participate in the water conservation programme. I have seen all the people voluntarily coming forward and working hand in hand and shoulder to shoulder for this noble cause.

मैं यह कहना चाहूँगा कि सरकार अकेले सब कुछ नहीं कर सकती। इसी तरह सिर्फ़ नारे लगाने से कुछ नहीं होगा। पानी हर किसी की ज़रूरत है, इसलिए हम बच्चों समेत सभी को जल संरक्षण कार्यक्रम में हिस्सा लेना चाहिए। मैंने देखा है कि सभी लोग स्वेच्छा से आगे आकर इस नेक काम के लिए कंधे से कंधा मिलाकर काम कर रहे हैं।
