Once there was a poor woodcutter. During the rainy season he could not earn money. For several days and nights he had nothing to eat. He made a long journey on foot in search of some job.

एक बार एक गरीब लकड़हारा था। बरसात के मौसम में वह पैसे नहीं कमा पाया। कई दिन और रात तक उसके पास खाने को कुछ नहीं था। वह काम की तलाश में पैदल ही लंबी यात्रा पर निकल पड़ा।

On the way he came across a well. When he was passing by the well he heard “Help, Help”. The woodcutter peeped into the well. He saw a monkey, a tiger, a snake, and a jeweller trapped in it.

रास्ते में उसे एक कुआं मिला। जब वह कुएं के पास से गुजर रहा था तो उसने “मदद करो, मदद करो” की आवाज सुनी। लकड़हारे ने कुएं में झाँका। उसने देखा कि उसमें एक बंदर, एक बाघ, एक साँप और एक जौहरी फँसे हुए हैं।

They cried again, “Take us out”. The woodcutter was in a fix. If he pulled out the snake and the tiger, they might kill him. He said, “When you come out, you will bite me or kill me.” The tiger and the snake said, “We are not so thankless as to harm our saviour.” The woodcutter took all of them out. They thanked him and said, “It will be a great pleasure if we can be of any help to you,” and went away.

वे फिर चिल्लाए, “हमें बाहर निकालो”। लकड़हारा असमंजस में था। अगर उसने साँप और बाघ को बाहर निकाला, तो वे उसे मार सकते थे। उसने कहा, “जब तुम बाहर आओगे, तो तुम मुझे काटोगे या मार डालोगे।” बाघ और साँप ने कहा, “हम इतने कृतघ्न नहीं हैं कि अपने उद्धारकर्ता को नुकसान पहुँचाएँ।” लकड़हारे ने उन सभी को बाहर निकाल लिया। उन्होंने उसका धन्यवाद किया और कहा, “अगर हम आपकी कोई मदद कर सकें तो हमें बहुत खुशी होगी,” और चले गए।

Days passed. The woodcutter was cutting a tree in the forest. He was very exhausted and hungry. He stopped near a tree. The monkey saw him and dropped some sweet fruit for him. The woodcutter ate them to his heart’s content and felt full of energy. He started his work again. While coming back he met the tiger. The tiger presented him a set of gold ornaments. The woodcutter thought, “My worries are over now. I shall sell the gold and get money. I can spend my life easily and comfortably.” He went to the jeweller to sell the ornaments.

दिन बीतते गए। लकड़हारा जंगल में एक पेड़ काट रहा था। वह बहुत थका हुआ और भूखा था। वह एक पेड़ के पास रुका। बंदर ने उसे देखा और उसके लिए कुछ मीठे फल गिरा दिए। लकड़हारे ने उन्हें जी भरकर खाया और ऊर्जा से भर गया। उसने फिर से अपना काम शुरू कर दिया। वापस आते समय उसकी मुलाकात बाघ से हुई। बाघ ने उसे सोने के गहनों का एक सेट भेंट किया। लकड़हारे ने सोचा, “अब मेरी चिंताएँ दूर हो गई हैं। मैं सोना बेचकर पैसे कमा लूँगा। मैं अपना जीवन आराम से और आराम से बिता सकता हूँ।” वह गहने बेचने के लिए जौहरी के पास गया।

The jeweller at once took the ornaments and went straight to the king. He said to the king, “Your highness, the lost ornaments of the princess have been found.” The poor woodcutter was arrested and put in prison. He thought of the ungratefulness of the jeweller and thought of the snake. The snake appeared at once and said, “I shall bite the queen and she will not recover unless you touch her forehead with your axe and in this way you can win the king’s favour.” Having said so the snake went away.

जौहरी ने तुरंत गहने लिए और सीधे राजा के पास गया। उसने राजा से कहा, “महाराज, राजकुमारी के खोए हुए गहने मिल गए हैं।” बेचारे लकड़हारे को गिरफ्तार कर जेल में डाल दिया गया। उसे जौहरी की कृतघ्नता और साँप के बारे में सोचना पड़ा। साँप तुरंत प्रकट हुआ और बोला, “मैं रानी को डस लूँगा और वह तब तक ठीक नहीं होगी जब तक तुम अपनी कुल्हाड़ी से उसके माथे को नहीं छूते और इस तरह तुम राजा का अनुग्रह प्राप्त कर सकते हो।” इतना कहकर साँप चला गया।

The snake bit the queen. The clouds of danger loomed over the life of the queen. One of the king’s men said, “The woodcutter in the prison can save the queen’s life.” At once the woodcutter was called. He came and touched the queen’s forehead with his axe. She recovered fully. The woodcutter was released and the king gave him all his ornaments and a lot of gold. The ungrateful jeweller was very much ashamed of his act.

साँप ने रानी को डस लिया। रानी के जीवन पर खतरे के बादल मंडराने लगे। राजा के एक आदमी ने कहा, “जेल में बंद लकड़हारा रानी की जान बचा सकता है।” तुरन्त लकड़हारे को बुलाया गया। वह आया और अपनी कुल्हाड़ी से रानी के माथे को छुआ। वह पूरी तरह स्वस्थ हो गई। लकड़हारे को रिहा कर दिया गया और राजा ने उसे अपने सारे गहने और ढेर सारा सोना दे दिया। कृतघ्न जौहरी अपने कृत्य पर बहुत शर्मिंदा हुआ।
